From Snow to Spring: A Groomer’s Guide to Keeping Dogs Tick-Free This Spring
As the snow melts here in Ontario, we start to see the first real signs of spring at the
grooming table, muddy coats, shedding undercoats... and unfortunately, ticks! From a groomer’s perspective, spring is one of the most important times of year to stay proactive about your dog’s health and skin care.

🌿 Tick Season Is Starting
Ticks become active once temperatures rise above 4°C, which often means early spring in
Ontario. We frequently find ticks hiding:
● Around the ears
● Under collars and harnesses
● Between toes
● In thick neck or chest fur
Regular grooming appointments help us spot these pests early but prevention at home is
essential. Make sure your dog is on a tick and flea program, and always check them after
walks in wooded areas or tall grass.

Boyd Conservation Park is widely known as a tick hot spot in Vaughan, especially
during the spring and early summer months when tick activity is at its peak.
🦟 It’s Not Just Ticks
Spring also brings:
● Fleas, which can quickly spread in warmer weather
● Mosquitoes, which carry heartworm
● Increased wildlife activity (like skunks and raccoons)

Keeping your dog clean, brushed, and on a regular grooming schedule makes it easier to
monitor their skin and coat for any changes.
🐾 Why Spring Grooming Matters
Seasonal coat blowouts trap dirt, moisture, and debris close to the skin. Without proper
brushing and deshedding, this can lead to:
● Matting
● Skin irritation
● Hot spots
● Missed ticks or fleas
