Heatwave Alert: Keep Your Pet Safe This Summer

By Vanessa Rios
With extreme heat sweeping through the GTA, I wanted to reach out — not just as your wellness coach, but as someone who genuinely cares about your pet's health and safety.
Summer may feel fun to us, but for pets, this heat can be dangerous — even deadly.
Every year, emergency vet visits spike due to heatstroke, severe skin infections, dehydration, and stress-related illness. Many of these cases are preventable with the right care. That’s why I’m sharing everything you need to know to keep your pets cool, calm, and safe this season.
The Hidden Danger of Summer Heat
Unlike humans, pets can’t sweat to cool down. When heat builds up, especially in pets with thick coats, flat faces, or those who are overweight. it can quickly turn into an emergency.
Heatstroke can set in within minutes, leading to:
- Vomiting
- Collapse
- Organ failure
- And in some cases, death
This isn’t just about comfort, it’s about protecting their life.
Grooming = Heat Relief + Skin Health
A matted, dirty coat traps heat and bacteria, making it even harder for your pet to stay cool. During a heatwave, this can spiral into:
- Hot spots
- Fungal infections
-
Painful matting
-
Excessive itching and discomfort
What to do:
- Move grooming appointments closer together
- Add a “Bath & Tidy” in between
- Ask about de-shedding, medicated baths, and summer trims
A clean, well-groomed coat acts like climate control — it lets your pet’s body breathe, release heat, and stay cool.
Nutrition for Heat Resilience
The heat affects more than skin — it impacts digestion, hydration, and energy. Here’s how to help:
Keep Meals Moist
- Use wet food, rehydrated raw, or mix kibble with water or bone broth
- Avoid rich, heavy foods that stress the digestive system
Offer Cooling Snacks
- Watermelon (seedless, no rind)
- Cucumber
- Frozen carrots
- Blueberries
Boost Their Defenses
Ask me about:
- Pet-safe electrolyte support
- Omega-3s for inflammation and skin health
- Probiotics for gut and immune balance
Fun Ways to Keep Cool Indoors
Frozen silicone treat toys
Supervised frozen raw bones
Chilled enrichment time in A/C or shaded areas
Watch for Warning Signs
If your pet is:
- Panting heavily
- Licking or scratching more than usual
- Acting sluggish or shedding excessively
Don’t wait. These may be early signs of heat-related stress. Let’s talk about what they need, whether that’s a soothing bath, skin treatment, or tailored care plan.
