Helping Your Pet Transition Into Back-to-School Season

As back-to-school season rolls around, the entire household goes through a shift in lifestyle—and our pets feel it too! Dogs and cats are sensitive to changes in routine, and when the home suddenly goes from full of family time to long stretches of quiet, they can experience stress and anxiety.
The good news is, with a little preparation, you can make this transition much easier for your furry family members.
Easing Into a New Routine
One of the best things you can do is start early. If your pet’s mealtime, walk schedule, or playtime will change once school starts, begin adjusting those routines a couple of weeks in advance. Shifting things gradually makes it easier for your dog or cat to adapt when the full routine kicks in.
It also helps to practice short departures, leave for a few minutes at a time, then slowly extend the duration. This builds your pet’s confidence and comfort with being alone.
Preventing Boredom and Anxiety
When pets feel anxious, it often shows up as whining, pacing, chewing, scratching, or even accidents in the house. To curb these behaviors, introduce activities that keep their minds busy. Enrichment toys like a frozen Kong or puzzle feeder can turn alone time into something rewarding. Even hiding treats around the house gives your dog a fun “job” to do while you’re gone.
Don’t underestimate the power of exercise! A brisk morning walk, a short play session, or ten minutes of obedience training can go a long way in helping your pet burn energy and settle calmly until you return.
Creating a Calm Space
Having a safe, quiet place to relax can help pets feel secure. If your dog is crate-trained, leave their crate open and inviting with a cozy blanket or bed. For others, set up a soft spot in a quiet corner of the house. Leaving behind something that smells like you, such as a worn T-shirt, can also bring extra comfort and reassurance.
Before You Head Out
A little preparation makes all the difference. Make sure your pet has eaten, has fresh water, and has gone out for a potty break. If you’ve squeezed in some exercise or playtime, even better. Setting them up with a full belly, empty bladder, and a calm mind will make the hours apart much smoother.
Coming Home
The best part of everyone’s day is reuniting. Take time in the evenings to reconnect with your pet—whether that’s a cuddle on the couch, a walk around the neighborhood, or practicing a new trick. These moments strengthen your bond and reassure your pet that, no matter how busy the day gets, they’re still your top priority.
Back-to-school season doesn’t have to be stressful for your pets. With small adjustments and a little extra love, you can help them feel safe, happy, and ready to take on the new routine right alongside you.
