Spooky Season Smarts: Keeping Halloween Fun & Safe for your Pets

Spooky Season Smarts: Keeping Halloween Fun & Safe for your Pets

From treats to trick-or-treaters, here’s how to keep your dog safe, calm, and happy this Halloween!

Know Your Dog’s Limits

Every pup is different: while some dogs love to be part of the action, others get anxious around costumes, loud noises, or creepy decorations. Pay close attention to your dog’s body language to see how they’re handling the Halloween hubbub. If they seem stressed or if you know from experience that they just aren’t fans of spooky stuff, it’s best to let them skip the trick-or-treating fun this year.

Enjoy a Pre-Trick-or-Treat Walk

Before the doorbells start ringing, take your dog for a nice, long walk. This helps release excess energy, keeps them calm, and makes the evening more relaxed for both you and your pup. Plus, it’s a great chance to enjoy some fresh fall air together! Check out helpful tips for safe fall walks!

Costume Comfort Comes First

If you want your dog to join in the Halloween fun, keep comfort a top priority. Choose a lightweight, breathable outfit that doesn’t restrict movement, vision, or breathing. Always supervise pets in costume, and if your dog seems anxious, swap the outfit for a festive collar or bandana instead! Sometimes simple is best!

! Remember !
Halloween candy is for people, not pets! Chocolate, gummies, and many festive snacks can be dangerous or even fatal for dogs and cats alike.

Keep Treats Out of Paw’s Reach

Store all treats safely out of your pet’s reach, and give yourself a reminder to double-check for stray wrappers after the festivities wind down. Be especially cautious with products containing xylitol (a sugar substitute found in some peanut butters and candies), which is extremely toxic for dogs. Double-check ingredient lists, and never feed your dog anything unless you’re certain it’s safe. The same goes for decorations, some glow sticks, fake cobwebs, and light-up props can tempt curious pups but may cause upset stomachs or worse if chewed.

Kids and Costumes: Set Ground Rules

Young trick-or-treaters mean well but may not know what’s safe for pets. Take a moment to explain that sharing Halloween candy with animals is a big no-no! Even if your dog is giving their best “please share” eyes! If children in your home are dressing up, ask them to wait until they’ve left the house before donning masks or big hats, as these can spook even the bravest pups! Some teens and adults may also need this gentle reminder!

Create a Calm Hideaway

With the doorbell ringing and strange shadows moving outside, Halloween night can be overwhelming for pets. Set up a quiet, cozy area away from the front door and all the action, maybe a back room with their favorite bed and a special chew toy. This way, your dog has a safe retreat to relax in far from the hustle and bustle.
