Sun's Out, Tongues Out

Keeping Your Dog Safe and Cool During Ontario's Summer Months
Summer in Ontario is a wonderful time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine with your furry friend. From backyard playtime to long walks and cottage adventures, there are plenty of opportunities to make memories together. However, rising temperatures can also pose serious risks to our dogs if proper precautions aren't taken.
At Puppy Love Salon & Spa, your pet's health and happiness are always our top priorities. Here are some important tips to help keep your dog safe, comfortable, and cool all summer long.
Know the Signs of Overheating
Dogs don't sweat like humans do. Instead, they rely primarily on panting to regulate their body temperature. When temperatures climb, dogs can quickly become overheated.
Watch for signs including:
- Excessive panting
- Drooling more than usual
- Bright red gums or tongue
- Lethargy or weakness
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Difficulty walking or standing
- Collapse or loss of consciousness
If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of water, and contact your veterinarian right away.
Grooming Helps More Than You Think
Regular grooming can play a major role in helping your dog stay comfortable during the summer months. Brushing removes excess undercoat and loose fur, improving airflow through the coat and helping regulate body temperature.
While it may seem logical to shave every dog for summer, some breeds actually rely on their coat for insulation against both heat and sun exposure. A professional groomer can recommend the best summer grooming plan for your dog's specific breed and coat type.
Walk During Cooler Hours
Midday temperatures can be dangerous, especially on hot, humid days. Plan walks for early morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower.
A good rule of thumb: if it's too hot for your bare feet, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Pavement, asphalt, and concrete can become extremely hot and may cause painful burns.
Keep Fresh Water Available
Hydration is one of the most important defenses against heat-related illness. Make sure your dog always has access to clean, fresh water both indoors and outdoors.
When you're on the go, bring a portable water bottle and travel bowl so your pup can take frequent water breaks.
Create Cool Spaces
Whether your dog spends time indoors or outside, make sure they have access to shade and cooler areas.
Helpful ways to keep your dog comfortable include:
- Air-conditioned rooms
- Cooling mats
- Fans for air circulation
- Shaded outdoor areas
- Kiddie pools for supervised splashing
Never leave your dog without a way to escape direct sunlight.
Never Leave Your Dog in a Vehicle
Even on a mild summer day, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise to dangerous levels within minutes. Cracking the windows does little to reduce the risk.
Leaving a dog unattended in a vehicle during warm weather can quickly become life-threatening.
Adjust Exercise Levels
Dogs still need exercise during the summer, but it's important to adapt activities based on the weather. On particularly hot days, consider:
- Shorter walks
- Indoor games
- Training sessions
- Puzzle toys
- Swimming opportunities
Remember that puppies, senior dogs, overweight dogs, and brachycephalic breeds (such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers) are especially vulnerable to heat-related issues.
Summer Fun Starts with Safety
Ontario summers are meant to be enjoyed, and with a little planning, your furry friend can safely join in all the fun. By staying aware of the weather, providing plenty of water, adjusting activity levels, and scheduling regular grooming appointments, you can help your dog stay healthy and comfortable all season long.
At Puppy Love Salon & Spa, we're here to help keep your furry family members looking and feeling their best year-round. If your pup could use a summer refresh, contact us to book their next grooming appointment.
